MCES Collaborates with Survivors of Suicide

Over the past 10-12 years, MCES has not only increased its efforts in suicide prevention, it has become more involved with suicide postvention. Postvention involves informational, support, and referral services for individuals who have experienced a suicide.

For many years, MCES has provided technical assistance to Survivors of Suicide, Inc. (SOS), an all- volunteer organization that offers mutual self-help support groups and other services to individuals and families struggling with suicide loss.

As the incidence of suicide has increased in Montgomery County and adjoining areas, MCES has been asked to help a number of agencies and companies that lost a staff member to suicide. SOS received similar requests. However, both found few resources that they could share in such situations.

This was remedied, in part, with the publication of “Coping after a Suicide Loss at Work.” This brochure offers guidance for dealing with the aftermath of a suicide loss on the workplace, and includes a list of SOS’s support groups, meeting times, and locations.
